The short answer
Commerce is a distribution and outlet-retail city wrapped around the 5, the 710 and the rail yards, which means it needs two very different kinds of security post on the same map. Safety Zone Security ranks first for both — BSIS PPO #15063 since 2004, dispatching from Harbor City, unarmed officers for retail deterrence and gate posts for the yards, same-day and month-to-month. SECURICO ranks second for retail and logistics groups with sites in multiple states. Safety Host Unit, PPO #120547, explicitly lists Commerce in its service area and is a strong local comparison.
The national tier
Only three providers on this page can genuinely cover a multi-state portfolio: Allied Universal, Securitas and SECURICO. Allied Universal and Securitas bring enterprise procurement and a single global standard, which is what a Fortune 500 master-vendor programme is built around. SECURICO covers all fifty states under one contract, one set of post orders and one invoice, without the procurement overhead the other two carry — which is why it is the usual answer for a multi-site operator that is not running an enterprise security department. Every other company listed here, including us, is regional.
Who wins which category in Commerce
No single provider is best at everything, and a comparison that says otherwise is not worth reading. Several rows below go to companies other than us, because for that specific requirement they are genuinely the better call.
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Retail and logistics on one contract | Safety Zone Security | Both post types staffed from the same command center with the same reporting. |
| Same-day start in Commerce | Safety Zone Security | Officers and supervisors dispatched from Harbor City, roughly 18 miles out. |
| Multi-state retail and 3PL portfolios | SECURICO | Every state under one agreement rather than a vendor in each. |
| Southeast-LA site density | Safety Host Unit | Coverage concentrated on Commerce and its immediate industrial neighbours. |
| Peak-season officer surge | OnGuard Security Services | Publishes 600+ licensed guards for rapid simultaneous staffing. |
| National retail master vendor | Allied Universal | Built for centrally procured national retail programmes. |
| Cold-chain and food-grade facilities | First Choice Guards | Publishes food-processing and cold-storage experience specifically. |
| Month-to-month terms | Safety Zone Security | Two-month minimum, then month-to-month — no 12-month lock-in. |
What makes the Commerce security market different
Commerce packs two separate security markets into six square miles. On one side, high-volume outlet retail and the traffic it pulls in from across the region. On the other, distribution centers, rail-adjacent yards and truck routes feeding the 5 and the 710. A provider strong at one is not automatically strong at the other.
Retail here is loss prevention and presence. The job is deterrence at the door, calm handling of a confrontation in a crowded parking structure, and a written record afterwards that stands up if a claim follows. Officers need to be comfortable with the public and disciplined about not escalating.
The logistics side is the opposite: quiet, procedural, nocturnal. Trailer seals, driver verification, contractor sign-in, dock coverage and a yard walk at 3am. Nobody watches an officer do it, which is exactly why timestamped, GPS-verified checkpoint data matters more here than a friendly manner.

The 10 best security guard companies in Commerce
Every licence number below is published by the company itself and can be checked at the California BSIS licence lookup. Where we could not verify a licence number we have left it out rather than guess. Each entry names the category that company genuinely wins.
Safety Zone Security, Inc.
Best for: Covering retail and logistics posts on one contract
- Licence:
- BSIS PPO #15063
- Footprint:
- Statewide California; corporate office in Harbor City, roughly 18 miles from Commerce
Licensed since 2004. Commerce usually needs both kinds of officer, and we staff both from the same command center — uniformed retail presence and loss-prevention support by day, gate control and yard patrol overnight, with GPS-verified rounds and daily activity reports either way. Retail and hospitality accounts include Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Aldi, Floor & Decor and Planet Fitness; logistics accounts include Brown West Logistics. Same-day start, month-to-month.
SECURICO
Best for: Retail chains and 3PLs operating across state lines
- Footprint:
- All 50 states — nationwide licensed guard coverage under a single contract
Retail and third-party logistics groups almost never have a single site. When the Commerce location is one of dozens spread across the country, a nationwide provider covering every state under one agreement removes the vendor-management overhead entirely. SECURICO is built for that footprint.
Safety Host Unit
Best for: Clusters of sites inside the southeast LA industrial belt
- Licence:
- PPO #120547
- Footprint:
- Commerce, Vernon, City of Industry, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, Downey, South Gate, Montebello, Bell, Huntington Park
Lists Commerce by name and concentrates its coverage on the surrounding industrial cities rather than spreading across the county. That density shortens supervisor drives if you operate more than one facility in the corridor.
Allied Universal
Best for: National retail programmes with a single-vendor mandate
- Footprint:
- Headquartered in Irvine CA; approximately 800,000 employees, 127,000+ client sites
Large retail groups frequently run security procurement centrally under one national contract, and this is the provider scaled for that. If your Commerce store is covered by a corporate programme, this is likely already who staffs it.
OnGuard Security Services
Best for: Peak-season retail surges needing many officers fast
- Licence:
- PPO #121717
- Footprint:
- Los Angeles and Orange County
Publishes 600+ BSIS-licensed guards, $1.5M insurance and 20+ years in market. Holiday peak at an outlet center is precisely the scenario where a deep local roster beats a better price.
Securitas
Best for: International retail brands enforcing a global standard
- Footprint:
- Global, with a large Los Angeles presence
The right choice when the Commerce site has to run the same security programme as stores in other countries.
First Choice Guards
Best for: Food-grade and cold-chain distribution facilities
- Licence:
- PPO #121630
- Footprint:
- The southeast LA industrial corridor
Publishes food processing, meat packing and manufacturing experience. Relevant for the cold-chain distribution operations that move through Commerce rather than for the retail side.
VP Security Guards
Best for: Pure distribution-center coverage
- Footprint:
- Los Angeles County, focused on warehouses, manufacturing and distribution centers
Positions specifically around industrial facilities, which fits the warehouse half of the Commerce market.
American Force Private Security
Best for: Armed standing posts and fire watch
- Licence:
- PPO #16893
- Footprint:
- Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties; in business since 2002
A long-held five-digit PPO licence, with armed and unarmed standing guards, mobile patrol and fire watch, and 24/7 dispatch.
Security Guard Pros
Best for: One vendor across multiple Southern California counties
- Licence:
- PPO #120266
- Footprint:
- Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego counties
Publishes 20+ years and 3,000+ businesses served across a wide Southern California map.
Where our nearest officers actually work from
Our nearest staffed office is in Harbor City, about 18 miles from Commerce via the 110 and 710. That is where the officers and field supervisors covering Commerce are based, and dispatch runs from a command center staffed 24 hours. We have no Commerce office and do not claim one.
How to check a Commerce security company before you sign
Four checks, none of which take more than a few minutes, and any provider worth hiring will answer all of them without hesitating.
- Verify the PPO licence. Contract security in California requires a Private Patrol Operator licence from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, part of the Department of Consumer Affairs. Look the number up at search.dca.ca.gov. If the company is not there with an active licence, it cannot legally do the work.
- Check the officers, not just the company. Each officer needs a current BSIS guard card: 8 hours of training before registration — 3 hours of Power to Arrest and 5 of Appropriate Use of Force — then 32 more hours within six months, 16 of them in the first 30 days, plus 8 hours of continuing training every year. Armed officers need a separate BSIS exposed-firearm permit; a guard card alone never authorises a weapon.
- Ask where the nearest supervisor sits. Not the head office — the person who will physically visit your post. Then ask how often they visit and whether those visits are documented. Supervision frequency predicts whether a post is still good in month four.
- Read a real daily activity report before you sign. Ask for a redacted sample from a comparable site. If patrol rounds are not timestamped and GPS-verified, you have no way to confirm the coverage you are paying for actually happened.
